SANTOS
³Duo² Santos...take all your
preconceptions about duos and kick them to the curb!
Sure, Duo Santos can do the traditional ³duo² lounge gig but they are
certainly not limited to such situations. For the most part, Duo Santos
performs in venues that require a ³band². Why...because they go the extra
mile when it comes to presentation. They have a 60-piece light show with
smoke and effects. Adjustable staging and backdrops keep everything looking
neat and tidy. Unlike many P.A.s, theirs is very versatile in that it
maintains a top quality sound at any volume...whether it is a quiet,
laid-back lounge or a large, high-energy room requiring that extra pump in
the volume.
THE
PERFORMERS
John and Lisa Santos, both professional entertainers since the age of 18,
have been performing together for the last 20 years. John began his foray
into music with the accordion and quickly moved on to keyboards and guitar.
He was soon sharing the stage with the likes of Tommy James & the Shondells,
Frank Sinatra Jr., and Burton Cummings, just to name a few! Lisa started
with the flute and then came keyboards and percussion, including congas.
Each of them displays extraordinary vocal talent.
Because of Johnıs Portuguese background and Lisaıs ability to sing in
flawless Portuguese, the Duo has played for most of the Portuguese
communities in North America and has, in fact, achieved celebrity status
worldwide. They have recorded 10 albums in Portuguese. Most of their 32
musical videos have been compiled onto 2 video cassettes which, along with
their albums, have been released in Canada, the U.S., Portugal, Brazil and
Venezuela.
The duo also loves to sing in other languages... including Italian,
Spanish, French, Croatian, Greek, Hawaiian and German. Singing in
Portuguese, they naturally have an extensive Brazilian repertoire as well.
CAREER
HIGHLIGHTS
Aside from the privilege of getting to know so much of Canada and the
continental U.S., their work has also taken them to Hawaii, Bermuda, Aruba,
Portugal, cruises on the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, and a tour of
Australia where they did an average of 5 ³encores² per show.
Two of their songs were in the Top 20 in Portugal, where they perform for
crowds averaging 8,000 and their success there has lead to top-spot
interviews and the broadcast of various videos on CBC, CTV and
MuchMusic . Portugalıs satellite TV. station, RTP-I,
broadcasts their videos worldwide on a regular basis.
Most recently, Duo Santos has been performing for Disney Cruise Lines.They
were appearing on board regularly over the last 3 years but have decided to
stick to land for a while, performing around North America.
They have also been performing in many of the casinos that have sprung
up in southern Ontario.
SPECIALITY
Duo Santos have developed a speciality act for
promoting the Portuguese culture which is perfectly suited for international
folk fairs and the like. Using traditional costumes and instruments, they
present typical music from specific areas in Portugal, as well as providing
a brief history of each area. This presentation is enhanced, where venue and
budget will allow, with video clips of each area.
Included in the music is an example of fado which might be called
the ³Portuguese Blues². Made most famous on the international scene by
Amalia Rodrigues , fado is probably Portugalıs most important
contribution to the world of music and John and Lisa present it with the
respect and skill it demands.
REPERTOIRE
Duo Santos enjoys many styles of
music and this explains their varied repertoire. The following lists offer a
small sampling under each heading. Generally a night with Duo Santos will
involve quite a mix between the different styles but it ALL depends on the
crowd ! The ability to ³read the crowd² is just another of Duo Santosı many
talents!
